Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning begins as a solitary and stern figure, struggling against the fate imposed upon her by the fal'Cie (divine beings) who transformed her and her allies into l'Cie, forcing them to fulfill a mission or become monsters. Her primary motivation is to save her younger sister, Serah. Later, in Valhalla, the realm of the dead, Lightning finds herself serving as a guardian to the goddess Etro, battling her rival, Caius Ballad.
She eventually becomes the "Liberator" of souls.

Years later, with the world on the brink of destruction, the god Bhunivelze chooses Lightning as the "Redeemer" (or Liberator), a figure destined to save humanity's souls and lead them to a new world. In this final chapter, Lightning acts alone to save humanity within a 13-day time limit.
