lyrics
Names changed. Inspired by a story told to me.
[Verse 1]
Emily came from England, twenty-something, wild and bright,
the kind of girl that turned every damn head at night.
She loved airports, beaches, strangers, foreign towns,
Italy, Spain, another country — another man around.
She wanted life with the brakes cut loose,
champagne at midnight, nothing left to lose.
Sometimes one man, sometimes two,
sometimes a girl and a guy — she loved what freedom could do.
Men chased Emily everywhere she went,
and she loved every second, every compliment.
To her it was summer, bodies, heat and fun,
no tomorrow, no questions when the night had begun.
Then came Lucy.
Quiet Lucy had only loved one man.
Her ex.
That was her whole damn history.
Emily laughed:
“Girl, you need to live.”
One holiday, too much alcohol,
one handsome stranger, one hotel wall.
Emily pulled Lucy into something she’d never tried —
the three of them together, fear mixed up with desire.
And Lucy thought:
Maybe this is what being alive feels like.
[Verse 2]
The man was called James.
Nice watch. Nice suit. His own company too.
A wife back home who thought she knew
her husband was away on business for a few days.
Nobody looked sick.
Nobody looked afraid.
Nobody knew a goddamn thing.
The holiday ended.
Lucy went home and made peace with her ex.
They slept together again.
James went home to his wife,
kissed her hello, climbed into their bed
like nothing had happened.
Emily?
Emily kept travelling.
Kept dancing.
Kept collecting nights like postcards.
[Verse 3]
Then another friend, Sarah, said one afternoon:
“I’m getting tested. Come with me.”
She’d had several partners and wanted peace of mind.
The other two went along just to keep her company.
Tests were free.
So they laughed:
“Fuck it, we’ll all do one.”
Sarah: negative.
Then Lucy walked into the room.
Positive.
HIV.
She stared at the nurse like she’d spoken another language.
“No.”
She started crying.
“No, no, no — I’ve only done it once.
I had one boyfriend.
One fucking holiday mistake.”
Then Emily got her result.
Positive.
She screamed.
“You’re wrong! Do it again!”
Another test.
Another wait.
Another positive.
And suddenly every beach, every club, every man
came flooding back through her head.
Which one?
Spain?
Italy?
The guy from London?
The stranger in the hotel?
Nobody knew.
Maybe James had it.
Maybe Emily already had it.
Maybe somebody never knew they were infected at all.
That was the horror:
No villain walked into the room wearing a sign.
[Chorus]
It can be the rich man, the poor man,
the beauty with a perfect smile.
The businessman, the student,
the stranger staying for a while.
African, English, Italian,
black or white beneath the sun —
HIV doesn’t check your passport
before the damage can be done.
You can’t see it in a face.
You can’t smell it on their skin.
Sometimes the person carrying it
doesn’t even know it’s within.
[Verse 4]
Lucy broke down.
She kept saying:
“It was one time.”
One damn time.
And now she had to call the man she loved
and tell him he needed a test.
James had a wife to think about.
His wife had never been part of that holiday,
but suddenly that holiday could reach her bed too.
One night can travel further
than the people who lived it ever imagined.
Emily took it differently.
Fear became rage.
Rage became poison.
“Somebody gave this to me?
Then fuck everybody.”
Men still chased her.
She was beautiful, magnetic, impossible to ignore.
And now she knew.
But she stopped warning them.
One man after another.
Some nights several.
She told herself it was revenge.
But revenge against who?
Those men didn’t infect her.
They didn’t even know.
Pain had turned into cruelty.
Being infected wasn’t her crime.
Knowing and deliberately risking somebody else’s health
was the line she chose to cross.
[Bridge]
HIV did not begin because of nationality or race.
The main pandemic strain traces back to a virus that crossed from chimpanzees into humans in Central Africa in the early twentieth century.
Then humans carried it across borders, oceans and generations.
Today it belongs to no country.
No colour.
No social class.
Around forty-one million people were living with HIV worldwide in 2025.
About five million didn’t even know they had it.
So when somebody says:
“Trust me, I’m clean,”
ask yourself one question:
When was their last test?
[Final Chorus]
It could be your first time.
It could be your hundredth night.
A millionaire in a hotel suite
or somebody you met under neon lights.
Beautiful doesn’t mean negative.
Rich doesn’t mean safe.
Innocent doesn’t mean protected.
And fear doesn’t change your fate.
So love.
Travel.
Dance.
Have your summer.
But keep your fucking head.
Because a holiday ends.
The flight goes home.
The hotel changes the sheets.
And sometimes one night
keeps travelling long after everybody leaves.
[Outro]
Lucy thought once could never matter.
Emily thought consequences belonged to somebody else.
James thought home was separate from the hotel.
They were all wrong.
You don’t need to fear
