Through death there drags an age
Of dreadful, ancient lore.
A reign of savage fate,
Of hungry wolves in hordes.
With fire and dragon steel
I carved the laws and hailed my land;
I took your lives at will,
Gave death as prize and brand.

Hear the screams tonight
Rolling from the Carpathians’ height—
Yet God would never heed
My prayers for guard and light.
All that used to be
Is buried out of sight—
