Mean When I Needed You

Text
[Verse 1]
Where is the love you said was worth the fight?
I heard your point, I tried to set it right.
But every promise had a hidden price,
And every open hand turned cold as ice.
[Pre-Chorus]
You called it a game; I called it trust,
Now all those pretty words are turning into dust.
[Chorus]
I can’t stand that one simple thing:
You promised me forever, then made it sting.
I thought we’d find a way to make it through,
But what you called love came back as revenge from you.
When I needed you, you were nowhere near—
You were mean when I needed you here.
[Verse 2]
I kept your letters folded in a drawer,
Believed the things you’d sworn before.
I gave you room each time you changed the truth,
You took my patience like it belonged to you.
[Bridge]
Maybe I mistook your leaving for a test,
Maybe I kept making excuses for the rest.
But I know now what your silence meant:
A promise isn’t love if it’s never kept.
[Final Chorus]
I can’t stand that one simple thing:
You promised me forever, then made it sting.
I thought we’d find a way to make it through,
But what you called love came back as revenge from you.
I’ll take the long road out of here—
You were mean when I needed you near.
You were mean when I needed you here.
[Outro]
Where is the love you said was worth the fight?
I’m taking back my words tonight.

Musikstyle
Modern country ballad with a steady mid-tempo two-step sway, warm acoustic guitar and restrained brushed drums in the verses, low pedal steel answering the vocal, fuller electric guitar and harmony lift in the choruses. Intimate, weathered male lead vocal with clear conversational phrasing; build from sparse verses to a wide final chorus, then resolve with a short steel-guitar outro. Organic, close vocal mix and natural room warmth.
