Text
[Verse 1]
The thermometer leans by the kitchen door
Seventeen degrees in the shade
Dust gathers quietly along the sill
Where your blue coat used to fade
[Chorus]
Stay where the stone keeps cool
Stay till the hour turns
The well rope knocks against the wall
And the dry grass waits its turn
[Verse 2]
Your letter lies beneath the bread tin
Folded twice, the ink run brown
I take the road past the emptied orchard
With the sun pressing down
[Chorus]
Stay where the stone keeps cool
Stay till the hour turns
The well rope knocks against the wall
And the dry grass waits its turn
[Bridge]
No bell calls from the chapel hill
No cart comes up the lane
Only the gate with its loose iron latch
Tapping time against the frame
[Outro]
Seventeen degrees in the shade
The day holds still, the day holds still
The thermometer leans by the kitchen door
Seventeen degrees in the shade
Dust gathers quietly along the sill
Where your blue coat used to fade
[Chorus]
Stay where the stone keeps cool
Stay till the hour turns
The well rope knocks against the wall
And the dry grass waits its turn
[Verse 2]
Your letter lies beneath the bread tin
Folded twice, the ink run brown
I take the road past the emptied orchard
With the sun pressing down
[Chorus]
Stay where the stone keeps cool
Stay till the hour turns
The well rope knocks against the wall
And the dry grass waits its turn
[Bridge]
No bell calls from the chapel hill
No cart comes up the lane
Only the gate with its loose iron latch
Tapping time against the frame
[Outro]
Seventeen degrees in the shade
The day holds still, the day holds still
Musikstyle
Neofolk darkwave, minor-key and austere, deliberate mid-tempo pulse with low frame-drum thuds and a restrained motorik undertow; close-miked baritone over fingerpicked steel-string guitar and bowed low strings, with a distant analog drone widening the refrain. Begin sparse and dry, add hand percussion and a second guitar in the chorus, then strip back to voice and strings for the final verse. Intimate, weathered vocal delivery; earthy, shadowed mix with room tone and controlled low end.
