The Shape of a Day

[Verse 1]
You left your blue mug by the window
The one with a chip shaped like a crescent moon
I watered your basil on Sunday
It gave me one leaf, then another one soon

[Pre-Chorus]
I thought the quiet would feel like a room
With all the furniture taken away
But morning keeps finding the table
And setting a little more space in its place

[Chorus]
I’m learning the shape of a day on my own
Making two slices and eating just one
The kettle still clicks, the old floorboards still groan
And somehow the hours keep carrying on
I’m learning the shape, learning the shape
Of a day on my own

[Verse 2]
Your book is still open to chapter eleven
A ticket tucked in where the paper bends
I’ll take it downtown and read on the train
Let the story keep going, let the afternoon end

[Pre-Chorus]
I thought the quiet would feel like a room
With all the furniture taken away
But morning keeps finding the table
And setting a little more space in its place

[Chorus]
I’m learning the shape of a day on my own
Making two slices and eating just one
The kettle still clicks, the old floorboards still groan
And somehow the hours keep carrying on
I’m learning the shape, learning the shape
Of a day on my own

[Bridge]
Maybe the good things don’t vanish at once
Maybe they settle in ordinary places
A green little leaf in a chipped ceramic cup
A page turned slowly, a breath between phrases

[Final Chorus]
I’m learning the shape of a day on my own
Making two slices and eating just one
The kettle still clicks, the old floorboards still groan
And somehow the hours keep carrying on
I’m learning the shape, learning the shape
Of a day on my own

[Outro]
A day on my own
And the morning comes on
